Health pressure, the need to reduce antibiotic use, and invisible efficiency losses have become the main challenges for sheep feedlots. In this context, Nanta launches BestCor, a comprehensive management model that combines health prevention, precision nutrition, and data analysis to anticipate diseases and improve farm profitability. The program was presented at the National Sheep Market, one of the main reference meetings for the sector in Spain.
“The health and efficiency of the feedlot do not begin with the arrival of the animal, but much earlier, at the farm of origin,” explains José María Bello, Technical Director of Nanta. “The real cost is not only in visible mortality but also in all those silent efficiency losses that, if not detected in time, affect the growth, conversion, or profitability of the feedlot.”
The efficiency of the feedlot starts at the farm of origin
Transport stress, changes in diet and environment, or mixing animals from different origins make the transition one of the most critical moments of the lamb’s production cycle. In this phase, the risk of pathologies such as Ovine Respiratory Complex (ORC), coccidiosis, or dehydration increases, often subclinical processes that penalize average daily gain and reduce feedlot efficiency.
In response to this scenario, BestCor proposes an approach that acts in a coordinated manner from the farm of origin to the final finishing phase, integrating nutrition, management, health, biosecurity, and result analysis through tools like the Farm Coefficient and the Gesticor simulator.
The model is supported by 25 years of joint work with the CSIC, 717 fattening trials, and the accumulated experience with 85 farmers. “BestCor means moving from reactive management to preventive and data-based management, where decisions no longer rely solely on intuition but are supported by objective indicators,” highlights Bello.
The BestCor app: real data for objective decisions
One of the main innovations of the program is the BestCor mobile application, designed to record, visualize, and analyze productive, health, and economic indicators of the farm. The tool incorporates key KPIs, comparative graphs, alerts, and recommendations that allow anticipating possible deviations before they impact results.
Additionally, it facilitates comparison between batches, cycles, and farms, helping the farmer identify risk patterns and make more objective decisions. Among other parameters, the system allows evaluating the evolution of animal uniformity, detecting efficiency losses, or analyzing health behavior according to the origin of the lambs.
