Laboratorios Ovejero in the fight against resistance at Top Gan
Laboratorios Ovejero, a company manufacturing animal health products and a leader in immunotherapy, presented during the IV Top Gan Conference on dairy cattle organized by the Foro Agro Ganadero in León, a ‘Big Data’ tool that provides veterinarians, farmers, and the industry with the keys to making prudent use of antibiotics in dairy production livestock.
Multidrug-resistant bacteria cause around 700,000 deaths worldwide each year according to the World Health Organization (WHO), and forecasts estimate that by 2050, resistance will result in 10 million victims. It has been demonstrated that more than 60% of human pathogens are of animal origin, making the problem a global health issue.
PIROA Lactis Tool, the name given to the project by the company (Top Gan), utilizes a database that collects patterns and parameters related to diseases, resistances, and antibiotic use to provide protocols for optimizing the prescription of these medications and ensuring their responsible use.
On one hand, it provides farmers with useful information to improve the biosecurity levels of their farm and production system. On the other hand, it enhances the veterinarian’s skills, helping them to prescribe antibiotics appropriately using agile diagnostic methods.
Thanks to this tool, therapeutic options such as immunotherapy, which optimizes the cow’s immune system to prevent or treat infections, are made available to veterinarians.
“Our commitment to the prudent use of antibiotics to combat the emergence of resistant bacteria is the driving force behind the launch of this tool,” stated Juan Pablo Ovejero, CEO of Laboratorios Ovejero. “We want to foster alliances with all actors involved in the food production chain and provide them with tools so that together we can contribute to improving global health and employ effective alternatives for the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases,” added Ovejero.
PIROA Lactis Tool is based on 4 pillars of development.

“Given the current scenario of reducing antibiotic use in animal production, we believe that PIROA Lactis Tool can and will be clearly decisive in achieving this strategic objective,” stated Roberto Robles, Director of Livestock Technical Services at Lactiber, a company that has recently used the tool on two dairy cattle farms they collaborate with to assess its scope, sensitivity, and performance.
Robles stated at the Top Gan conference that, thanks to this project, they can obtain “valuable information in terms of biosecurity, critical points of the farms, recommendations for optimizing antibiotic use, and it also allows us to compare scenarios on different farms to relate it to the productivity of each one.”
One of the alternatives presented by Laboratorios Ovejero during the Top Gan conference as one of the weapons available to animal health to reduce antibiotic use in production livestock is immunotherapy.
Studies conducted by the laboratory itself have shown very positive results not only in the reduction of infections but also in the increase in productivity of livestock farms. All this with a significant contribution to milk quality by avoiding the use of antibiotics for treating sick animals.
With the use of immunotherapy and services like PIROA Lactis Tool, Laboratorios Ovejero aims to continue improving animal welfare and health through prevention, especially in a context where strategies based on One Health are increasingly common.
