CIDR® Ovis is a device for the induction and synchronization of oestrus and ovulation in non-cyclic ewes during seasonal anestrus, as well as for the induction and synchronization of oestrus and ovulation in cyclic and non-cyclic ewes to advance the breeding season.

CIDR® Ovis contains progesterone, which acts similarly to the natural progesterone produced by the corpus luteum, which regulates follicular development, oestrus, and ovulation.

The use of CIDR® is simple, being easy to insert and remove using an applicator.

The device, with a distinctive “T” shape, is inserted into the vagina of each ewe to be synchronized, with oestrus starting 1 or 2 days after its removal.

CIDR® has proven effective for the induction and synchronization of oestrus in all stages of the estrous cycle (cyclic, transitional, and anestrous females), helping to establish assisted reproduction systems and protocols such as fixed-time artificial insemination (FTAI), both with fresh and frozen semen. Additionally, CIDR Ovis presents fewer removal issues and less vaginal discharge than other commonly used methods1.

Advantages of synchronization

The benefits of oestrus synchronization in sheep, through the use of devices like CIDR® Ovis, are numerous. On one hand, it allows the production of lambs at the most advantageous time for the producer, such as when there is higher demand, prices are higher, or livestock feed is more economical; and it facilitates stable milk production throughout the year.

On the other hand, it aids in better management of work in lambing sheds, due to a stable workload throughout the year and efficient use of labor. Finally, it is an indispensable tool for genetic improvement associated with assisted reproduction techniques, facilitating the dissemination of high-value sire genes.
