Zoetis and Operational Group SOSTVAN support the sustainability of the dehesa

This SOSTVAN project, promoted by the Union of Beef Cattle Farmers (UGAVAN), an organization also sponsored by Zoetis, seeks to increase the added value in extensive farming areas where the beef cattle sector predominates.

Three lines of action have been defined:

  1. Develop a system that incentivizes fattening on the extensive farms themselves.
  2. Incorporate into the value chain the ecosystem benefits that the beef cattle sector provides to society.
  3. Creation of a technological platform that integrates all the generated information and facilitates direct communication between producers and consumers.

This last point will be based on Blockchain technology, as a means to ensure food traceability and offer maximum transparency and security to the final consumer.

The Operational Group SOSTVAN also includes the participation of the Universities of Salamanca and Extremadura, and the animal nutrition company De Heus, in addition to the collaboration of the Agrarian Technological Institute of Castilla y León (ITACYL), the cooperative Dehesa Grande, and the beef production company El Encinar de Humienta.

About UGAVAN

The Union of Beef Cattle Farmers (UGAVAN) was created last year as a representative body of the beef cattle sector in Spain to promote a union that would provide a more organized, stronger common space with greater capacity to defend the rights of farmers and their farms.

Currently, UGAVAN has nearly 10,000 farmers registered in 39 associations that host more than 280,000 animals on farms located mainly in the Dehesa area, Castilla y León, and Extremadura, as well as in the Cantabrian Cornice – Asturias, Cantabria, and Galicia.
