Bovigreen is born – Reducing the environmental footprint in beef cattle

The launch took place at the Intercontinental Hotel in Madrid as part of the event ‘Taking stock of the sustainability of the IBEX 35 – 2018 Results’ and was attended by representatives of major companies that, although outside the farming sector, have been working for many years within the framework of CSR and sustainability.

Bovigreen, which has a total budget of 53,640 euros, aims to improve sustainability in the meat sector using environmental footprint indicators and social and economic indicators (integrated approach) that can later be conveyed to the consumer.

Specifically, during these months of the project, a review of current legislation has been conducted, the work driven by the Directorate-General for Environment of the European Commission through the pilot projects on product environmental footprint has been studied, and work has been done on an innovative integrated environmental footprint approach that allows for encompassing more indicators than purely environmental ones, as well as the possibility of establishing a system of continuous analysis and improvement of these and, therefore, of production.

The operational group is led by ASOPROVAC and also involves the Fundación Empresa y Clima (FEC), the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV), Novadays, and the Neiker-Tecnalia Technology Center, with the collaboration of the Basque Government’s Public Environmental Management Company (IHOBE) and the National Association of Meat Industries of Spain (ANICE). Additionally, it has received support from Banco Sabadell.

The project, awarded within the framework of the call for the operation of supra-autonomous operational groups of the European Innovation Partnership for Agricultural Productivity and Sustainability (EIP AGRI), constitutes an investment co-financed 80% by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) and the remaining 20% by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA).
